Gulland's writing really made me connect to the character, Petite, or Mademoiselle de la Valliere. Right from the beginning, I immediately felt tenderness for the six-year old Petite; this child whose heart and mind races as quickly as the stallions she already knows how to tame and ride. However, Louis first had to neutralize Nicolas Fouquetthe Superintendent of Financesin order to give Colbert a free hand. Can their love endure in a world filled with lies, deception, betrayals, masks and sorcery?

Why does the author include this backstory? A riveting love story with a captivating mystery at its heart, Mistress of the Sun illuminates both the power of true and perfect love and the rash actions we take to capture and tame it. Do you have an affinity for them, or other animals, as well? One of his lovers was the wife of his own brother- Henrietta of England. It centres on Louise de la Valliere, one of Louis' early mistresses, telling her story from early childhood to death. This, then, is where Diablo began, with that horse portrait, which I put above my desk.

Can their love endure in a world filled with lies, deception, betrayals, masks and sorcery? All the wars and most of the politics take place off-stage. Set against the magnificent decadence of the seventeenth-century French court, Mistress of the Sun begins when an eccentric young Louise falls in love with a wild white stallion and uses ancient magic to tame him. Inevitably, people resort to various methods to control the invariables by means that are contrary to the teachings of the Church at the time.

On a practical level, logistics in the seventeenth century were never simple.

The marriage between the two first cousins ensured ratification of the peace treaty that Mazarin had sought to establish with Hapsburg Spain. It was my last research trip for Josephine. The principal taxes included the aides and douanes both customs dutiesthe gabelle a tax on saltand the taille a tax on land.

From the religious to the medicinal perspectives, she really provided enough information about the time period for her readers to imagine how it could have felt to live in that time period. Only the "unprivileged" classes paid direct taxes, and this term came to mean the peasants only, since many bourgeois, in one way or another, obtained exemptions.

Louis XIV believed himself a direct representative of God. CS1 maint: archived copy as title link.

Louis XIV of France

Although it sanctioned slavery, it attempted to humanise the practice by prohibiting the separation of families. Louise, a devout, rustic, tomboy daughter of minor nobility becomes the Sun King's official mistress. This aristocratic coalition was strong enough to liberate the princes, exile Mazarin, and impose a condition of virtual house arrest on Queen Anne.

The court of Louis XIV was one of the most interesting and resplendent in history, but Gulland manages to Mistress of the Sun King book its intrigues and splendors to the banal level of a modern soap opera. In addition to the royal court, the room palace housed the nobility that Louis XIV had brought into his sphere as well as the thousands of staff needed for upkeep.

Engraving of Louis Mistress of the Sun King book To support the reorganized and enlarged army, the panoply of Versailles, and the growing civil administration, the king needed a good deal of money. This, then, is where Diablo began, with that horse portrait, which I put above my desk.

Louis XIV eventually legitimized most of his children born to mistresses in the years following their births. Her rationales for choosing Mazarin were mainly his ability and his total dependence on her, at least until when she was no longer regent.

It was not only that life became insecure and unpleasant — a fate meted out to many children in all ages — but that Louis had to be taken into the confidence of his mother and Mazarin and political and military matters of which he could have no deep understanding".

In addition, most of the princes refused to deal with Mazarin, who went into exile for a number of years. Anne and Mazarin Mistress of the Sun King book largely pursued the policies of Cardinal Richelieuaugmenting the Crown's power at the expense of the nobility and the Parlements.

Mistress of the Sun evolved through countless drafts: There have been many endings! The court was left with the impression that the vast sums of money needed to support his lifestyle could only have been obtained through embezzlement of government funds.

Inevitably, people resort to various methods to control the invariables by means that are contrary to the teachings of the Church at the time. His ability to remember movie trivia is what keeps him alive to search for the killer of Diana and later others around Ben.

Anne protected Mazarin by arresting and exiling her followers who conspired against him in the Duke of Beaufort and Marie de Rohan. The Fronde years planted in Louis a hatred of Paris and a consequent determination to move out of the ancient capital as soon as possible, never to return.

By the s, however, the devoutly Catholic Louis XIV believed his faith should be the sole religion of his country. At times I felt Louise was too sweet to be true. A pure soul at heart, Petite constantly struggles to fight the evil battle. The focus of the novel is Louise's emotions and her relationships, with her confessor, her friends, her family, her beloved horse and her rival Athenais the Marquise de Montespanas well as with Louis.

Are you generally a fan of historical novels? Although Fouquet's financial indiscretions were not very different from Mazarin's before him or Colbert's after him, his ambition was worrying to Louis.

Louis XIV transformed the royal hunting lodge in Versailles where he played as a boy into a the Palace of Versailles, a monument of royal opulence. The multiple mentions of the fear of the Devil and his demons gave a sense of where religion stood at the time and exactly how great of a role it played in these people's lives. At the risk of addiction to the fascinating era of the Court of the Sun King, I highly recommend the following books.
