Books decoding body language are catnip to all poker players, and this is a good one. Let me know in the comments below! I didn't care for Phil Hellmuth's habit of inserting text about how great he is. Of course Navarro discusses attitudes, acting, and "classical" tells. Joe's work encompasses focusing on all parts of the body, even that below the table as, he states, the feet and legs are the most telling part of the body. One of the seminal works on the subject is, of course, Mike Caro's "Book Of Poker Tells" which, to be honest, no one has come close to touching in its depth and analysis of players at the tables.

After a fairly large selection of Forewords, Prefaces, Introductions, and such, Navarro starts in on the bases for his observations regarding tells in poker. Well, the Poker Brat has enough for us all in this clip with Howard Lederer. Secondly, the facial display tells that he demonstrated are highly accurate. If the information that Navarro gives there can be applied to the professional poker world, then think about how accurate they can be in your next home game!

It is peppered with references to the greatness of Annie Duke, TJ Cloutier, and of course Phil Hellmuth, who is allowed to conclude nearly every chapter with a self-absorbed rant about some amazing laydown he made based on a recently analyzed tell. Note: The quickest way to start winning more money at poker is to improve your preflop skills. The book introduces you to the subtle movements that may indicate the relative strength of your opponents hand. How does this apply to the poker table?

He establishes context for the Phil Hellmuth Presents Read Em and Reap book he discusses by drawing connections to such disparate subjects as the behavior of juries during courtroom trials, the responses of Mission Control to the Apollo 13 crisis, and his own experience interrogating witnesses and suspects.

We should expect that a book on poker tells will be an advocate for the benefits associated with spotting tells and to strongly recommend the players not project them.

It is a book that should be read and reread if you want to make money playing poker Aug 28, Laurie rated it liked it I think my regular poker game pals are going to have fresh reason to lament. In later chapters, Navarro goes on to detail how these limbic responses manifest themselves in instinctive body movements.

After articulating the importance of observation, Navarro explains some of the physiology and even the evolutionary biology of tells. Navarro stresses that observation of individuals is the key to deriving these tells and then proceeds to break down where to look for these definitive indicators.

Even though Phil Hellmuth may, Phil Hellmuth Presents Read Em and Reap book, be a brat at the table and subject to volatile outbursts, there is no denying he is one of the best poker players out there. Finally, any book that you can reread and pick up things you missed is definitely a tool that you can constantly learn from.

I believe, though, that even someone with Navarro's understanding of the hidden messages behind human behavior won't gain benefits to the extent implied by this book. In a short amount of time Navarro has gained a reputation in the poker community as a man with considerable insight into the psychology of players.

Check it out here. The book introduces you to the subtle movements that may indicate the relative strength of your opponents hand. These include tells related to feet, hand, mouth, and eye movement. There are many great demonstrations of these tells done through photographs in the book and Phil Hellmuth adds in his support for Navarro's work by offering demonstrations of how he has used the former FBI agent's instructions at the tables, with surprising accuracy.

Anyway, let us travel back in time to the WSOP and this classic Poker Brat tantrum and name-calling extravaganza. Warning: this clip is a bit long, but wait for it. While I wouldn't say that it's groundbreaking or transcendent, but I would say that it's a solid addition to the literature on the topic.

This includes the Main Event, when he became the youngest WSOP champion 24 years of age after a victory over Johnny Chan heads-up: a record that would stand for 20 years. Read more from Upswing Poker:. There is a challenger to that crown now in the form of a former FBI special agent.

Poker Brat versus Kid Poker Yet again, Hellmuth makes a bad call with mediocre cards yet blames Daniel Negreanu for raising with a better hand.

Welcome to the 21st century of poker. I'm guessing that most people who are interested in the topic of poker tells will find at least some of what Navarro has to say to be worthy of consideration.

Over the past two years, Navarro has applied his formidable intelligence and relevant experience to poker, and the result is a book that every player should read.
